Stap aan boord van dit machtige schip en ontdek haar opmerkelijke geschiedenis. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitoostende.be\/en\/mercator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">De Mercator<\/a> had slechts twee commandanten en maakte 41 reizen. In 1956 repatrieerde het de resten van Pater Damiaan van Molokai. In 1960 voer het de haven van Antwerpen binnen en in 1961 werd het ingericht als museumschip. Lees in onze blog enkele interessante feiten over deze belangrijke mijlpaal.\n<h2>Schotland Wortels<\/h2>\nHoewel de Mercator in het mooie Oostende ligt, werd zij gebouwd in het Schotse Leith op de scheepswerf van Ramage en Ferguson en in 1932 te water gelaten. De barkentijn Mercator werd ontworpen door de Antarctische ontdekkingsreiziger Adrien de Gerlache (1866-1934) als opleidingsschip voor de Belgische koopvaardijvloot.\n<h2>Een naam in kaart brengen<\/h2>\nDe Mercator is genoemd naar Gerardus Mercator, een 16e-eeuwse geograaf en cartograaf uit Vlaanderen. Hij is bekend omdat hij in 1959 de wereldkaart maakte op basis van een nieuwe voorspelling die zeelieden hielp om nauwkeurige vormen van landboodschappen en betrouwbare lijnen van constante peiling te krijgen.\n<h2>De beginjaren<\/h2>\nDe loopbaan van de Mercator begon in 1934 toen het schip van Pitcairn Island, Tahiti en Papeete, naar de Markiezeneilanden en Honolulu voer voor een Belgisch-Franse wetenschappelijke expeditie. Dit was haar zevende cruise en stond bekend als een vrij opmerkelijke cruise voor diegenen die aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog voorafgingen.\n<h2>Oslo naar Oostende<\/h2>\nHet schip won ook een belangrijke race van Oslo naar Oostende in 1960 en nam in de jaren vijftig deel aan de races Torbay-Lissabon en Brest-Canary Islands.\n<h2>Drijvend Museum<\/h2>\nIn 1961 werd ze een drijvend museum, eerst in Antwerpen, en uiteindelijk in 1964 in de jachthaven van Oostende, vlak voor het stadhuis. Vanaf 2013 bleef ze daar in het hart van de stad, open voor bezoekers. Onlangs heeft de stad Oostende de Mercator in volle eigendom verworven na de restauratie van de iconische Driemaster in haar oude glorie en pracht.\n<h2>Final Battle Years<\/h2>\nOp 21 februari 1940 vertrok de Mercator voor haar laatste cruise voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Ze voer naar Rio de Janeiro en kwam daarna aan in Boma. Van begin 1945 tot medio 1947 stond het schip onder toezicht van het Britse leger. Helaas voer het schip na 1947 pas weer uit in 1951. Het schip ging terug naar Belgi\u00eb voor uitgebreide onderhoudswerkzaamheden.\n<h2>Drijvend Museum<\/h2>\nIn 1961 werd het schip een drijvend museum voor vele bezoekers uit de hele wereld, eerst in Antwerpen, en in 1964 keerde het terug naar de jachthaven van Oostende, vlak voor het stadhuis.
